I'm up in the air on the aliens. Personally I think they look they were modeled after Kang and Kodos from the Simpsons. Why is it that the aliens always have to be some sort of insectoid / lizard like creature? IMO that genre is completely outdated and needs to go away. I do like the Mechs though. Whether or not they were created as bipeds to frighten the humans makes no difference to me. The Mechs are what I would expect from an alien invasion. Unmanned drones programmed to kill and clean up the environment to make it safer for the colonization to occur. The actual "Skitter" aliens are complete garbage in my book. unless they are not the actual alien race but a sort of genetic creation to aid the mechs with phase 1. When they were at the food store the aliens "skitters" came out of the racks in the "Alien" fashion. They uncoiled from their hiding location. it's already been done! Also, they dont seem to be armed. Are the Skitters armed? I can only recall the Mechs actually firing after they locked on their targets. Perhaps Im wrong, please fill me in if so.

I'm terrified of spiders, and so that aspect of the Skitters creeps me out. However, overall, I don't find them very scary. In fact, in the scene where the Skitter was dying, I was sitting there thinking to myself, "Oh, he's cute. How sad."
The Mechs, on the other hand, really scare me for some reason. I was on the edge of my seat during the scene where Hal is hiding from them by the river. And, yes, they do have to zero in before they shoot.

I think that the skitters are controled by the mechs. They are prisoners and are forced to do the bidding of the mechs. The skitters are controlling the kids but seem to care for them.
The kids were collecting scrap metal from the buildings -- perhaps to build more mechs?
Just a theory.

I don`t think that the Mechs controll the skitters....but it is an interesting theorie...and i agree that the kids were scavenge metal to build something....but who knows...probably not even we in this season...
And i think it is a really interesting idea Six legs - six kids- Theorie someone pointed out...that if one kied dies or is missing, the others have to die too...remember Rick`s group...one gone, rest was killed...but i have been wrong before, so it is maybe nothing....

Oh yeah, I didn't think of that... But then the skitter should have noticed, with Hal, that there was one kid too many...

Maybe it is just if one is missing and not if it is one more?

I see that this thread is a bit out dated, so I think I'll just jump into the deep end of the pool and see if I can jump start it. I Hope I don't drown!!
I too was confused by the insect/arachnid appearance of the aliens. I thought perhaps the creators were borrowing from War of the Worlds. I also entertained the idea that since they hail from another world, maybe there was a war and all that survived were from the insect family, and they just evolved.
Then an interesting comment was made by the teacher/scientist who was questioning a remark made by one of the children. He said the a student asked why the aliens with so many legs would create a machine that was a biped. That opened a few doors in my brain. Oddly enough that was never explored, and even after we learned that there are others in charge here that are some what humanoid...it has yet to be focused on. Maybe later. But never the less, the writers were slipping a clue in there.
Another subtle move by the powers that be, was the relationship between the so called aliens and the machines. The robotic fighters do appear to be superior to the creatures that move about, but upon closer examination you learn that the machines do defer to the skitters.
Please recall the moment in time when Hal sees the machines assemble the children in front of him. They are not gunned down until one of the skitters gives the command. What I think we are seeing here is an army with rank and file.
Very early on I questioned the skitters capabilities. As pointed out, they do not seem to carry any sort of defense. To me they are as agile as they are clumsy being encumbered with so many appendages. Their communication skills are seriously lacking and the radio wave thing made me wonder if they were not also being controlled. As a species...advanced or not, they did not represent themselves to me as a major force. Something was amiss here.
When the good lady doctor finally discovered that they too were harnessed, I was both delighted at the prospect of the writers giving us a more intelligent dilemma to ponder, and horrified at the prospect of what it really meant.
Could the skitter have once been like us? If so, that would be a very strange metamorphose indeed. And if they are captives, could they then become our allies in the grand fight for survival and freedom? Peace....Sammy

Now that we have learned who really is in control of the alien force, I have to wonder just what Spielberg had in mind when he designed the invading army. It was of interest to me when one of our fighters referred to the main powers that be as (Fish-face). So I got on the internet to check out the buzz. Some one mentioned that it had a head that was sort of like a dolphin. I found that curious as dolphins are known to be highly intelligent.
Dolphins, like us are mammals, breath air and have wombs. What makes them totally different from us is that they have to remain in the water to truly thrive. If you subscribe to Darwinism than you believe that God had little to do with our inception and that we hailed from the sea. This would mean that we evolved and developed appendages for getting about on land. This might make the appearance of the aliens understandable, but would put God where on the chessboard of the universe?
Questioning that, I looked up how the world was created according to the Bible. It would seem that creatures of the air and water were created on the 5th day and we arrived on the 6th. Since they came first then that opens a good argument for us evolving from them but, if that is the case God could have taken the entire week-end off to go play golf and party with his friends. That seems doubtful to me.
Spielberg is a man that has drawn references from the Bible in the past. Regardless if he is a believer or just a scholar of the word, he is a knowledgeable man of the most read book on the planet. So where is he going with this?
Perhaps he has hit upon something new. Most of us believe that if the aliens can get here and we can’t arrive there, they are superior to us. Well, maybe not!! If they are using our own material against us along with our youths to do the work and communicate with us, then maybe they are not so adept.
They have been monitoring us for generations and have learned our weaknesses, but our strengths seem to have either bored them or appeared unimportant. That in any battle is a mistake. This therefore does not make them ultimately superior to us.
These creatures are flawed just like us. I therefore have to wonder if the dolphin like critters march from the sea was a bit too soon and they have not yet evolved enough to challenge other being of the universe.

Glad you found that note worthy....now one has to wonder just what is up with the red-eyed skitter.

First off, the Skitter Control theory is still in discussion because they never explained it in the series so far.
Secondly, Mechs requirement to lock in is now out of the question. Season 1 shows their requirement to lock in which they showed the actual laser from the mechs head. However in Season 2 there was none. Did the Overlords upgrade the mechs?? Who knows. The mech took out a entire mob when Tom got off of the ship without locking on. Another is the end of Episode 2x02 where Tom mans a machine gun to let the people cross the bridge. The mech killed the line of 4 or 5 soldiers while Tom wasted the Skitter without locking on. So do they require to lock on or were they upgraded??

It is conceivable that the Skitters are an entirely different race, perhaps from another planet, that were "forcibly integrated" ( perhaps enslaved) into their race too do "the dirty work" There are lots of parallels to that notion in many Sci-fi series. Ultimately perhaps that is how the Overlords will be defeated: by an uneasy "Skitter-human" alliance
