My Take On….FALLING SKIES on TNTWhat would you do if aliens landed on Earth, hellbent on taking over the human race? Would you lay down and take the punishment, sacrificing everything you know and love? Or would you join up with some resistance fighters, call yourselves an army, and fight back? While I’d probably find myself lying in the fetal position, letting the aliens do whatever they want, that’s not the case for the 2nd Massachusetts of FALLING SKIES (two hour premiere at 9/8c on TNT). Led by (gravel-voiced) Weaver (played to perfection by Will Patton), and seconded by history professor turned army-man Tom Mason, the 2nd Mass is not going to take this attack lying down. More here

The InquirerJonathan Storm: 'Falling Skies' is a superior breed of sci-fiBy Jonathan Storm Chicken Little famously ran around warning that the sky was falling. Warning time has passed in TNT's new series, the summer's main basic-cable event, as scurrying aliens, their blaster airplanes, and clanking doomsday robots have ravaged the countryside and killed most everybody. Yet the surprisingly captivating series is called Falling Skies, not Fallen Skies, because, six months in, plucky bands of citizen soldiers and civilians are still fighting to survive, even if the human criminals are getting discouraged Read more: www.philly.com/philly/columnists/jonathan_storm/124064589.html#ixzz1PjWFHvlv

Eclipse MagazineFalling Skies: The Other Spielberg Series Is Superb! While Terra Nova has gotten huge press – partly because of the scrubbing of its early premiere and partly because of a pretty spiffy trailer – Steven Spielberg’s other series, Falling Skies [TNT, Sundays, 9/8C] is coming off without a hitch, this weekend. And it’s really, really good! More here: eclipsemagazine.com/television/24881/

Working Out Author Falling Skies (2011) PreviewHostile alien invasion plots are a staple of the science fiction genre and seem to be particularly well-suited for television. Global crises always sweep aside the differences between people that real life seems to focus on, allowing the human characters to bond quickly and easily. Aliens also provide a convenient “other” toward which all characters and audiences can channel their hate with impunity without worrying about being politically correct. Finally, something as grand as a planetary takeover lends itself nicely to the typically gentle story arc of a TV season. Produced by Steven Spielberg, TNT’s new drama Falling Skies looks to capitalize on all of these plot assets, but goes one step further by highlighting that the most important facet of alien invaders is how they showcase the humanity of the people left to defend Earth. TV Review: Noah Wyle Fights to Survive in ‘Falling Skies’CHICAGO – It’s the end of the world as we know it, and the ragtag resistance fighters of “Falling Skies,” starring Noah Wyle from “ER,” are defending themselves against a surprise extraterrestrial colonization of earth. Live free or die hard. Falling Skies combines 2009’s “District 9” (space alien lizards), 1984’s “Red Dawn” (kids practicing guerilla warfare) and, of course, 1996’s “Independence Day” fairly effectively, while not going too far into the philosophical and psychological damage that a nuclear war-style destruction could have on a delicate American society. Noah Wyle is excellent as a conflicted ex-Military history professor turned warrior who represents a reasonable voice among the chaos. IGN Falling Skies: Premiere Review Aliens attacked. We lost. Now what?
We've seen a lot of alien invasion stories before, but you have to give Falling Skies credit for at least taking a different tactic than most. Rather than showing the full-scale chaos of aliens attacking us (a la War of the Worlds or Independence Day) or the slow build, "Something bad is going to happen…" vibe of V, Falling Skies begins after the aliens attacked – and we lost. PopMatters'Falling Skies' Series PremiereFalling Skies’ mix of compelling individuals helps to make its early use of formula less troublesome than it might have been. Later episodes develop interesting and diverse motives, as the 2nd Mass begins to figure out what the aliens are up to and how to fight them more effectively. Wyle’s earnest hero is flawed and sympathetic, as he struggles with his loss, seeks to save the world, and develops a relationship with a doctor named Anne (the excellent Moon Bloodgood). What’s remarkable is that he’s only one of many reasons that Falling Skies is good science fiction. More here: www.popmatters.com/pm/review/143932-falling-skies/

The Good The Bad The GeekyFirst Thoughts: FALLING SKIES Since the inception of L0ST, a lot of shows have tried (and failed) at bringing the sense of urgency and wonder that the little castaways from Oceanic 815 brought onto the airwaves, both cable and network-wise. Shows like V, Invasion, amongst others, have tried the sci-fi plot, let alone alien invasion, and ultimately they all failed; not just critically but for the audiences too. Luckily TNT has seemingly sidestepped the whole ‘bad-sci-fi’ thing by making one of the most exciting and riveting hours on television involving an alien invasion. Newobserver
'Falling Skies': TNT serves up solid sci-fi entertainmentSure, things are pretty bad right now. The economy is terrible, people are out of work, we're fighting I-don't-know-how-many wars, and "The Real Housewives" franchise is still thriving on Bravo. But at least earth hasn't been overrun by murderous aliens who have wiped out most of the planet's inhabitants and have the rest of us on the run while they try to kidnap and enslave our children. That's the kind of light-hearted fare you'll find in TNT's ambitious new summer science fiction series, "Falling Skies," which debuts this Sunday. Alex's TV Watch
Advanced New Show Review: TNT's "Falling Skies" When I put this DVD in the DVD player, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. I had heard very good things from other critics on the Twitterverse, so my expectations were on the high side. Plus, I'm a sucker for a well done Sci-Fi show. There aren't too many of those out there, so I was hoping that this could fill that particular void in my TV viewing. I wasn't expecting greatness or for it to be the best cable drama of all time, but my expectations were higher then when I watch other new shows. What I found was a very capable Sci-Fi show that held my attention very well. That's all I can really ask for from a show, and this one does it well. It creates a world that I actually want to spend time in and characters that aren't flat. That's all that I really want and really need from a summer TV series. I don't need something with complex themes, symbolism, and other intelligent items like those (I'll get that when I watch Breaking Bad). All I really need from this series was a well done action show that doesn't do much beyond keep me entertained. Sure I had high expectations, they weren't completely met, but I'm fine with what this show actually is. More here: alextvwatch.blogspot.com/2011/06/advanced-new-show-review-tnts-falling.html

HITFIX
Review: TNT's 'Falling Skies' a solid alien invasion thrillerTNT's "Falling Skies" (Sunday at 9 p.m. on TNT) an alien invasion drama produced by Steven Spielberg, seemed like an ideal candidate to be a flaming chicken dish. It's combination that once upon a time would have seemed fantastic, but where my expectations have been lowered by too many mediocre Spielberg TV projects that seemed like he lent his name and little else, and by too many terrible alien invasion series like "V" and "The Event." But it turns out that "Falling Skies" is that rare time where the chicken tastes as good as it looks. It's a sci-fi series with a heavy focus on character and story (but also with good action when it's called for), and a Spielberg TV show where you can see his fingerprints in the work.
