The show is great but what drives me nuts is what stops these aliens from sending out their ships at night and decimating the convoy which has to be so visible from the sky... The skitters always seem to know the general area where the 2nd mass is... How hard could it be for the aliens to patrol the skies, find the 2nd mass either on the road or in their compound and destroy them?

The aircraft are heat seeking, and those blanket things they've wrapped the engines in prevent the vehicles from showing up in their vision (without causing the vehicles to overheat? Methinks this little trick is going to go the way of mech bullets in Season 3.) 2. The local skitter commander has no air power to speak of, or can't/won't spare it out over the backroads where they're driving. 3. They're deliberately letting them travel to Charleston.
