I'm thinking those harnesses are actually larvae and will cocoon themselves and turn into skitters(probably using the kids as food for their change)
the regiment should have two of the quietest patient ninjas/scout/snipers to follow skitters/mechs/kids around and take pictures of everything they do would be interesting, when they report back the captain could update the data via colored pegs in the map, maybe anticipate their next move
strange that they don't have a tunnelling mole rat division, dig more tunnels than 'meerkat manor' and have places to run to if they get overrun 'S' shaped tunnels are easy to defend, one person can hold off a regiment, as well as sandbag the school so the bags absorb impact, not the people inside
anyone else have any thoughts? I'm just blowin smoke

Wild Guess: whatever Karen did to him, Hal Mason's paralysis has nothing to do with her. It's just good old-fashioned hysterical paralysis/conversion disorder.
Does anyone remember the old MASH episode where a soldier had that? I actually reference it in my fanfic.
