... the super advanced aliens who wiped out the entire earths military in a day can't locate a convoy of trucks half a mile away from them, driving around with their headlights on high beam, because they've sticky taped some pink ceiling insulation to their bonnets? Or, 'hey we found the generator, lets turn on every light in a five story hospital coz nobody will notice that'. Or the fact the a solitary girl in a low flying biplane without the first clue as to where they might be could find them but the aliens with spaceships and UAVs that have been in constant close contact with them for months can't? Or that when they are 'scouting' three feet from enemy Mechs they all suddenly run around yelling plot points to each because somebody said something 'script significant' and the bad guys never notice! Or they park their entire convoy in a traffic jam right next to the bridge they are repairing just after the aliens attacked it with air power, while fully aware that they being closed in on by ground forces, because they just 'know' they're not going to be attacked at that moment, when one medium sized missile would take out their entire force? How is it that an alien force capable of completely annihilating the worlds most sophisticated military forces keeps getting their arse handed to them by a handful of civilians with light weapons who think it's a good idea to all 'take cover' in one neat bunch behind the shell of a burnt out car?

I have one solitary word for observational people like you: Hollywood
They try to draw in the most people they can for views, not what is true. If I had to place a number on it, I would say 95% or even more of movies contain fake Hollywood type stuff that just does not make sense or plain would not work.
In my opinion, that is ok though because I still like the show and enjoy the creativity of the team behind this show. Although not 100% real, no show is. Sit back and enjoy your popcorn, I know I am!

i assumed that wiping out of the earth military wasn't a big deal since they weren't hiding and they were relatively very primitive.low techs solutions have been used before in combat to fight high tech enemies.Like the VC hiding in dug outs and tunnels and using bamboo spiked traps .They certainly told the U.S. what a total commitment to victory and freedom meant. As for being defeated by the militia type 2nd mass, they certainly didnt send there whole force or any like there whole force after them.they had to use a "force appropriate response" to any threat. And thus leave the rest guarding other areas and dealing with other issues.the reason they couldn't find em was they kept away from the main base/force and kept moving and mostly the enemy had to rely on what were essentially high tech drones(which they learned to fool) to scout the area for the humans. Its just science fiction but there are plausible explanations if you want them (unlikely but plausible)

as for the air ships i dont think there problem was not detecting cars or smaller groups of humans just that their AI had been given certain parameters to follow ignore small groups concentrate on larger ones that are liable to be more threatening etc

One clever VC trick was to build their bamboo bridges slightly below the water; all but impossible to spot from the air.
Iraq is another pertinent example. We beat their most modern, conventional forces in a matter of days, but spent the rest of the time suffering from weaponry that wouldn't look out of place in the latter years of World War II (RPGs and AKs; Panzerfausts and STGs). They started out using cellphones to set off their IEDs, but when we started jamming their cell phones they went to using grenade pins and strings.
Also, early episode airships seem to have been a bit smarter than the current ones. My personal theory is that they were remotely-piloted by sentient operators and/or better AI's, and have been dumbing down due to combat losses. Similar to how they mention in the prequel comics that mechs can still function after their handlers are dead, but they ain't quite as smart.
